Current Research Agenda
My research is driven by questions on central issues facing economies and markets. Over the last 10 years, I have focused on questions about how banks and credit markets can contribute to economic growth, but also when they challenge financial stability — and the role of monetary policy in this process. These questions are even more important today when we worry about excessive debt both at the corporate and sovereign level, challenges to transition to a green economy, as well as digitization that both require a substantial amount of funding. What is the future role of banks in this process that are challenged by FinTech competitors, as well as by monetary policy? How can we broaden capital markets in Europe and also ensure availability of funding for small and medium firms when bank funding is allocated elsewhere? All of these are first order questions we need to find answers to in the upcoming years.
In some areas, we have an abundance of data, while in others high quality or simply any kind of data still eludes our research. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are ways to help me work with big data, but also to close the data gap to provide new and innovative perspectives on the central questions described above.
